Telehealth Ranked Second-Highest Technology for Improving Patient Outcomes, Following EHR
A new survey by healthcare software provider AdvancedMD has found that telehealth is viewed by medical group employees as the second most impactful technology on patient outcomes—trailing only electronic health records (EHR).
The findings come from a nationwide survey conducted by AdvancedMD to assess which healthcare technology tools are making the greatest difference in clinical effectiveness and patient care across independent medical practices.
Top Implemented Technologies
Survey participants identified the three most commonly used technologies in their practices as:
- Electronic health records (EHR)
- Practice management systems
- Patient portals
Although telehealth solutions were less widely implemented than these core platforms, they were ranked second only to EHR in terms of impact on patient outcomes.
“Telehealth not only provides flexibility and convenience for patients—it’s a fundamental component of the patient experience that has a significant impact on patient outcomes,” said Amanda Sharp, CEO of AdvancedMD. “As patient demands evolve and become more consumer-driven, practice leaders who invest in integrated technology solutions will be better positioned to deliver accessible and personalized care.”
Key Findings on Technology and Care Delivery
The survey highlighted several trends related to how practices are using technology to support personalized, data-informed care:
- EHR-driven personalization: Nearly 70% of respondents said they use data from their EHR to develop tailored care plans for patients.
- Analytics adoption: 60% of respondents reported using patient-care data and analytics to identify trends that improve treatment strategies.
- Positive technology impact: Almost 70% agreed that their current healthcare technology stack positively affects patient outcomes.
- Integration matters: 85% of those surveyed believe that data integration capabilities are essential to providing personalized care.
“The fact that so many respondents understand the critical connection between data integration and patient care underscores one of our core pillars as a healthcare technology provider—seamless integration,” Sharp said.
Mental Health Stands Out
When asked which areas of care benefit most from healthcare technology, 53% of respondents pointed to mental health—more than any other category, including preventative care, chronic condition management, and pain management.
Shifting Patient Expectations
The survey also captured changes in patient behavior and expectations:
- Nearly 70% of respondents said patient expectations have increased over the past year.
- 29% described the increase in expectations as “significant.”
- Despite this shift, 66% of patients are still scheduling appointments by phone.
Conclusion
The survey reflects a growing recognition of the role digital tools play in modern care delivery—particularly in enabling data-driven decisions, personalized care, and accessible services such as telehealth.
