ShiftMed Unveils AI Workforce Suite to Help Health Systems Cut Costs and Streamline Staffing

ShiftMed has launched a new suite of AI-powered workforce management tools aimed at helping hospitals and health systems manage labor costs and improve operational efficiency amid growing financial and staffing pressures.

The Workforce AI Suite automates key aspects of clinician scheduling and staffing workflows, allowing health systems to reduce administrative overhead, better utilize internal staff, and limit dependence on high-cost external labor.

Addressing Labor Pressures and Medicaid Shifts

The rollout comes as hospitals face tighter margins due to rising labor expenses and changes in Medicaid reimbursement. ShiftMed’s tools are designed to help healthcare organizations respond to these pressures without compromising care delivery.

“Hospitals today face the dual challenge of maintaining optimal patient care while operating with leaner teams and tighter budgets,” said Todd Walrath, CEO of ShiftMed. “Our AI Suite enables healthcare organizations to automate complex workforce processes, helping them spend smarter on their largest expense—labor—while driving down costs and unlocking new levels of operational efficiency.”

Key Features of ShiftMed’s Workforce AI Suite

The suite includes several integrated tools:

  • ShiftAdvisor™: Matches clinicians to available shifts based on personal preferences such as time, location, and pay. With a reported 94% opt-in rate for self-scheduling and over 3.3 million shift matches to date, the tool aims to reduce scheduling friction and improve clinician engagement.
  • Intelligent Routing™: Uses AI to route shifts to the most cost-effective labor source. More than 6.4 million shifts have been routed using this engine. A public API enables integration with hospital platforms, and early users report savings of roughly $300 per shift.
  • Instant Call-In Fulfillment: Automates last-minute shift coverage using AI-driven workflows. The system currently has a 71% success rate in fulfilling call-ins and is designed to reduce the manual burden on staffing managers.
  • Agentic Workflows via ShiftMed Flex: Streamlines staffing, credentialing, and onboarding through a centralized platform. Health systems using Flex have reduced time-to-hire by an average of 29 days and saved over two hours per transaction in scheduling and credentialing.

A Broader Push Toward AI in Staffing

The new suite reflects a broader trend toward AI adoption in healthcare operations, where workforce management is a growing area of focus. ShiftMed’s tools aim to make staffing more predictable, cost-effective, and less reliant on manual coordination.

By embedding these solutions into existing systems, health systems can gain better control over labor planning while supporting staff well-being and continuity of care.
