Technology Review: MOCAheart

At first glance it’s hard to believe that MOCAheart is actually a heart monitor. Its sleek design is something that is both eye catching and user friendly. MOCAheart is able to monitor heart rate, blood oxygen level, and overall heart health through a 1-5 scale known as the MOCA Index.

The Set Up
MOCAheart works with the connected app which is iOS and Android compatible. Creating an account was a simple process which included the option of signing in with an email account or phone number. Once signed in you are directed to input a number of physiological stats such as height, weight, and gender. Following those questions, the MOCAheart app gathers lifestyle information; smoking, drinking, etc. This completes the set up portion and the device is ready to be paired.

Syncing and Use
I don’t know if it was because I was using an android phone, but the pairing aspect seemed to happen automatically with no notification. After some toggling I realized the device had connected and I was ready for my first scan. MOCAheart works by scanning the thumbs and using blood velocity as a correlator to blood pressure. Algorithms measure blood flow to determine heartrate, blood oxygen levels, and the MOCA INDEX, which is a qualitative measurement of blood flow that is correlated to blood pressure.

Generally, the faster blood circulates through the blood vessels, the more pressure the heart is under. One of the best aspects of MOCAheart is the device’s ability to track your results, as well as share with friends, family, and also physicians. Although the device is not FDA cleared MOCAheart delivers exactly what it promises, simple heart health monitoring in a very discrete and innovative way.
