Baby Boot Camp at Eskenazi Health Better Prepares New Parents

New mothers and families are learning about what to expect and how to prepare for childcare in a “Baby Boot Camp” offered by Eskenazi Health and enabled through their Tigr system from TeleHealth Services – the nation’s leading provider of hospital television systems and interactive patient engagement solutions. Eskenazi Health’s Family Beginnings video-based patient education is available on demand for mothers and families, and offered in multiple languages. Being able to “time shift” the education based on when mothers and family members are available has created a more ideal patient experience and better engagement for families. The new approach replaces scheduled 90-minute classes, alleviates the need for clinical staff to present the class, and ensures consistency in the comprehensive information provided to help new mothers and families.
Studies have proven that patient retention of education materials is increased through the use of video when compared to printed handouts that are often not read or fully understood. Program topics include infant and mom care, breastfeeding, immunizations, infant safety, development and injury prevention.
Solution for Clinical Staffing Challenges
Previously, Baby Boot Camp was offered as a 90-minute workshop between two and four days a week, depending upon staff availability to teach the classes.
The demand on clinical staff for balancing nurse resources to prepare and teach the workshop was a challenge. In addition, the need for interpreters for Spanish-speaking patients was also a significant barrier to conducting the classes.

Engaging Patients for Successful Learning
To ensure that patients understand the education, the Family Beginnings team prepared questionnaires for patients providing a more personalized approach. The Tigr system automates the assessment process with results sent immediately to nurses, who use the teach-back method with one-on-one discussions to further confirm comprehension. In the patient satisfaction and evaluation surveys, patients are reporting that they obtained valuable information and are more confident in caring for their baby. They also share the information with other family members to help in their baby’s care.
“Most of our patients are eager to watch the videos and take the quizzes,” said Toni Galyan, Eskenazi Health staff development coordinator and project director for Baby Boot Camp. “They think the quizzes on their TV are like playing trivia or a game show and their visiting family members can also be involved. When we held live classes during the daytime, spouses and other family members were at work. Now everyone can participate, and the lessons learned go home with the whole family.”
